Providing management support

A sustainability manager at a company within the financial sector experienced lack of control over the different sustainability initiatives in the organization. The senior management was asking for reports on what was going on and how the specific initiatives were supporting the business strategy and helping the company advance towards its vision.

When we approached the company, showing the sustainability manager our web based Corporate Responsibility Navigator™ (CRN), he was immediately interested in finding out how this could simplify his job and free up time for planning and strategic development.

The CRN is a web based subscription service that applies the Balanced Scorecard approach to the sustainability effort within an organization. This tool is also desinged to handle reporting frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) enabling the possibility to create a sustainability report with less hassle, presupposed that the company has been feeding in the necessary data.

Our consultants supported the sustainability manager in migrating the company’s vision, strategic objectives for different areas of its sustainability effort, success factors, Key Performance Indicators and current actions into the tool. When the sustainability manager brought up the Strategy Map view on the screen of his lap top, it became clear that a number of the current actions within the sustainability effort did not seem to connect to their corresponding strategic objectives.

After a couple of months the sustainability manager, supported by CRN, was able to satisfy the senior management with a report showing that he was on top of the different sustainability initiatives. The company was also working more cost effectively than before and able to comply with the GRI framework for reporting, which was one of their sustainability objectives, ahead of plan.
